Prostitution is an extremely dangerous vocation. However, the leaders in Spain are trying to make the ladies of the night’s job slightly safer. Or are they?
Although it’s often frowned upon, prostitution is completely legal in Spain, but with one condition: the women must wear reflective vests while walking up and down the street looking for work.
Although they’re donning the same gear as traffic cops and bike riders, prostitutes aren't exactly “serving and protecting” (although that can also be debated). While the reflective vests seem to cramp their style, the Spanish Police claim that the sex workers can pose a danger to drivers who cannot see them on the prowl late at night.
Some skeptics, however, are saying that the law is intended to push the prostitutes out of town in an effort to “clean up” the city. In fact, every time a prostitute is found without her vest, she is fined $55 USD. So is this a ploy by the government to drive out these night owls or an honest plan to save a couple more lives, irregardless of their social status or hierarchy. At Brushfire we are prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best of intentions. Have YOU helped save the world today?
